Each November, most of us take time to think over the past year and recall the things in our life, for which we are grateful. I see Facebook feeds filled with these posts. I love wearing my shirt because I too, am grateful.
However, it is easy to be thankful for your family and your friends. Being grateful for your health is also simple. So, when I was asked to think about what it is I am grateful for this year, I wanted to dig a little deeper.
I began looking back over my life and all of the great things that have happened to me. There was meeting my husband, working ourselves out of debt, the birth of our children, realizing success as a entrepreneur. Again, those are easy to recall.
But then, I looked at what happened before some of those great life changing events happened to me. That made me think even more about my life and the direction it has taken me.
I found a common thread that wove through all of them. It was one simple word:
Wait! What?!? Failure?
Yes. Failure is a good thing. Here is why.
In failing, we often find ourselves. When life doesn’t go the way we want for it to, we have two choices: quit or persevere. I always chose the latter. This has happened to me many times in my life. Some of the biggest failures in my life have lead me to my greatest rewards. Here are a few examples:
In my late 20s, a long-term relationship I was in ended. I decided to try something new and move to Kansas City. A couple of months later I met my husband, which has given us three amazing children. My relationship failure lead me to my greatest blessing ever – my family.
During that same time in my life, I had to declare bankruptcy (as a result of that failed relationship). I was forced to learn more about finances. But then, a few years later, my husband and I had built up more debt again. I had failed not only in having to declare bankruptcy, but also by not learning the right way to handle money. This time, I worked with him and we fought and paid off more than $37,000 in debt. Failing financially lead me to become a financial expert.
A few years ago, my business was thriving. Then, some of my partners changed their terms and it nearly fell apart. Rather than quit, I changed my thinking and direction. I’ve built it back to up into something even better than it was before. Nearly losing my business has turned me even more successful.
I now challenge you to do the same. Take a moment and look at the failures in your life and see which ones have lead you to your greatest successes. Those may be the things for which you are now most grateful.
